Images of water work wonderfully for interiors as they have a horizontal and vertical movement to them, a softness of lines to compliment the straight lines of the walls, ceilings and corners. Water displays multiple, vibrant colours which help to highlight and merge the colour pallet of a room together and bring elements from outside, in.
Water is so versatile and full of life, I love the way the light dances on the surface creating wriggling lines as it moves in time with the breeze leaving dazzling patterns and new colours. Whether you seek a room that is striking or tranquil, this element achieves it.
So what of the effects. This is an element with multiple personalities. powerful, aggressive, strong, rough, wild, dangerous yet also calming, relaxing, welcoming and kind. My appetite to photograph it on my travels is insatiable.
I captured it’s calming effects in many of my images with boats floating on it’s surface. Calm and serene as they sit waiting in harbours. Perfect for bathrooms and guest bedrooms. Yet the force awakens at sea. ‘Wave cutter’ is an image of a boat I was on, cutting through the water. Colours grew out of the waves and a new energy was created. An empowering feeling to bring in to the workplace.
With wild and spirited excitement, water reminds us of the perfect combination of beauty and danger. ‘Red Rods’ consists of a calm, neutral background with flashes of crimson. This photograph was taken in a harbour in Yarmouth at dawn. It is a blend of serenity and danger that will bring a flash of vitality to any room.
Home to so many amazing living things, water it is the elixir of life. ‘Pond Life’ shows life below water and reflections from above. The water has fascinating depths in more ways that one. You see reflections on its surface, movement in its shape and prism effects through its depths. This photograph was taken in China. The reflections of the leaves and the fish being at different depths gives this multi-layered kaleidoscopic photograph a mystical feel. Look closely for March hares in bow ties!
